The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, held a telephone conversation yesterday with the President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenskyy, to whom he reiterated “Spain’s full support until peace is achieved” and with whom he committed to continue “sending material to Ukraine and instructing its Armed Forces”.
“I have just spoken with Volodimir Zelenskyy, to whom I have reiterated Spain’s full support until peace is achieved,” Sánchez stated through his official Twitter account. “We will continue sending material to Ukraine and instructing its Armed Forces,” he continued. “Another 200 Ukrainian military start their training this month in Toledo.”
“I have had a telephone conversation with the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez”, with whom “I have spoken about the challenges on the front and to whom I have conveyed Ukraine’s defensive needs”, declared, for his part, the Ukrainian leader through the same social network.
Last November, the Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, reiterated before her EU counterparts Spain’s commitment to the European Union Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine (EUMAM Ukraine), which will allow, she assured, the training of up to 2,400 military personnel per year in the new Toledo Training Command. “We have made an offer to train 400 military personnel every two months”, he indicated.
Pedro Sánchez has had several telephone conversations with Zelenskyy since the invasion of Russia began on February 24, 2022. The first one took place on February 27, very shortly after the beginning of the invasion, and the second one took place on June 21, a few days before the European Council in which the European leaders granted Ukraine the status of candidate to the European Union and the NATO Summit in Madrid, in which Volodymir Zelenskyy participated by videoconference.
In addition, the two leaders met personally in Kyiv on April 21, during an official visit of the President of the Government to Ukraine accompanied by the Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen. On that occasion, the head of the Executive conveyed to him Spain’s “full support” against “this unjust and unjustified war” and announced the sending of 200 tons of military material, especially ammunition.
Zelenskyy also intervened on April 5 by videoconference before the Congress of Deputies and participated in mid-November in the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, which held its annual session in Madrid and was attended by Pedro Sánchez and five members of his Cabinet (none of them from the minority partner in the Government, Unidas Podemos).
