Fundación Scherzo brings back German-Russian pianist Igor Levit

December 9, 2022
in Entertainment, Leisure

As part of its Great Performers Series, the Fundación Scherzo announces the return of the German-Russian pianist Igor Levit on 13 December at 19.30 in the Symphonic Hall of the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid.

After his resounding debut last season in the Fundación’s programme, Igor Levit -one of the most mediatic pianists of the moment- returns to Madrid to offer a recital of an intimate nature, but one that does not lack the powerful and feral virtuosity that characterises him. His excellent interpretations, combined with a very influential social-political discourse in Central Europe, have made him, in the words of the German press, “the performer who transformed the piano into a trend”.

The first part of the recital will feature the introspection of J. Brahms and his 6 Chorale Preludes BV B 50, arranged by the Italian pianist Ferrucio Busoni. The more meditative and transcendent Brahms is followed by Fred Hersch’s Variations on a Folksong, a work that Levit himself commissioned from the American pianist especially for this 2022 tour. Perhaps the great emblem of Wagnerian musical drama is condensed in the prelude par excellence. Therefore, in this ode to the piano, the Prelude to Tristan and Isolde WWV 90 in an arrangement by Zoltán Kocsis could not be missing. The recital will conclude with Franz Liszt’s Sonata in B minor S 178, a work that the Austro-Hungarian composer dedicated to Robert Schumann and which is the epitome of the great romantic sonata.
