The Diplomat
Omar Obaid Alshamsi has been appointed as the new ambassador of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to Spain, to fill the vacancy left by Majid al-Suwaidi, after taking over the coordination of the work of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28), which will take place next year in Dubai.
The UAE’s new diplomatic representative, who will soon take up his post in Madrid, has been his country’s ambassador to Italy since May 2019.
A graduate in International Relations and Translation from the University of Strasbourg (France) in 1996, Omar Obaid Alshamsi joined the Emirati diplomatic staff that same year. Two years later, he was posted to the Emirati Embassy in Paris, and from 2002 to 2006 he was in charge of consular affairs at the Embassy in Lebanon.
Before being appointed Ambassador to Rome, he was posted for 13 years at the Emirati Embassy in the United States.
