Author: Jesús Maeso de la Torre.

Year of the Lord 1781, San Gabriel Mission, California. Father Prior, Fray Daniel Cepeda, alarmed by the wave of deadly assaults, writes to the Governor and Captain General Don Felipe de Neve requesting the protection of the dragoons. The Yuma warriors, including the young and indomitable Luna Solitaria and Búfalo Negro, are increasingly fearsome in their raids against the Hispanic missions and their inhabitants, mestizos, Creoles and Mexicans. They will have to face the troops of the dragoon captain Martín de Arellano, known to the natives of the viceroyalty of New Spain as Captain Grande.

Jesús Maeso de la Torre (Úbeda, Jaén, 1949) is one of Spain’s best-known authors of historical novels. He studied to be a teacher and later obtained a degree in Philosophy and History from the University of Cadiz. Throughout his career he has combined teaching with literature and historical research. After the great success of his novel Comanche, he returns to the northern territories of the viceroyalty of New Spain, from California to Alaska, and relives the great effort made by the Spanish Crown to maintain its influence in the area. A novel of adventure, honour, betrayal and love that is a vindication of Spanish memory in the United States.
