The Diplomat
The headquarters of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) in Madrid hosted yesterday the award ceremony of the XII Vicente Ferrer National Award for Development Education, after two years of obligatory stoppage due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The award, named after the Spanish development worker Vicente Ferrer, aims to reward educational experiences, projects or pedagogical proposals aimed at raising awareness, developing a critical spirit and encouraging the active participation of students in the achievement of a global citizenship committed to the values of the 2030 Agenda.
In this twelfth call, AECID and the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training have awarded 14 proposals carried out during the 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 academic years in centers in A Coruña, Ávila, Navarra, Valladolid, Alicante, Albacete, Las Palmas, Madrid, Santander, Tenerife and Valencia.
Among the winning proposals is a solidarity video clip to help Ukrainian refugees (entitled Ой ходить сон), made by the students of the first year of ESO of the Lluis Vives Institute, in Valencia. A well-known Ukrainian lullaby was selected from the music classroom, which the students rehearsed and recorded in several voices. A Ukrainian refugee student facilitated the pronunciation of the lyrics of the song.
The award consists of a diploma for the school and the participation of the teachers in a seminar for exchange and training in good practices in education for global citizenship and sustainable development, which takes place every year in one of the countries where Spanish cooperation works. On this occasion, the seminar was held in Valsaín (Segovia) in collaboration with the National Center for Environmental Education (CENEAM) and with the virtual participation of AECID’s Technical Cooperation Office in Costa Rica and UNESCO in Costa Rica.
