Next Monday 19th December, the headquarters of Casa Asia in Barcelona will host the presentation of the book El país más feliz del mundo (The happiest country in the world), with the participation of its authors, the journalists Sara Romero and Macarena Vidal, and the renowned correspondent Rosa Mª Calaf, who will present the event.
The death of Kim Jong-il took the world by surprise. His successor, a young man barely thirty years old and educated abroad, had the responsibility of continuing the legacy of the personalist Kim dynasty and the shadow of doubt over his ability to command the ambitious leadership of the North Korean regime.
Ten years on, Kim Jong-un has accelerated the arms and nuclear development of his impoverished country, created his own clique of loyalists by purging in many cases the old regime leadership, and transformed Pyongyang into a showcase of high-rise buildings and neon lights. The road map drawn up by the Kims continues with a leader who, after completing the military arsenal that will guarantee the regime’s survival, is now turning his attention to economic revival. A mission enlivened by pop propaganda and outlandish summits with his number one enemy: the US.
Journalists Macarena Vidal and Sara Romero have witnessed these changes during their visits to North Korea. In this book they recount unusual aspects of the harsh daily life of its people, the iron control of the dictator and the life that goes on after crossing the last frontier of the Cold War.
