Spain and Persia, known as Iran since 1935, have maintained relations for almost 500 years, as evidenced by the fact that as early as the 16th and 17th centuries there is evidence of the exchange of embassies, pacts and conflicts. This book is a journey through this diplomatic history, a chronicle full of rigour and brilliant documentation that brings us closer to the people who have woven the relationship between these two countries. Leopoldo Stampa thus recovers the key figures who forged the diplomatic links between Spain and Persia over the centuries: García de Silva y Figueroa, Alberto Rivadeneyra, José Romero Dusmet, Javier Perez-Griffo, Félix Laporta, Manuel Pradas, Javier Vallaure, Santiago Cabanas, Aurelio Valls, Javier Oyarzun and José María Sierra, among many others. In addition, the reader will find accounts of situations as disparate and significant as state trips, the excessive partying in Persepolis, the Islamic revolution, the assault on the American embassy, the Iran-Iraq war and the sinking of Spanish oil tankers. Stampa is a demanding writer who, with his entertaining and accurate prose, engages the reader, who is treated to hundreds of descriptions and meticulous recollections that make Spain and Persia a book full of vigour and interest.
