The Theatre of the Instituto Francés in Madrid will be screening The Miser by Molière tonight at 8 p.m., with actors from the theatre company of the Comédie-Française in Paris and actors from the Académie de la Comédie-Française. Screening in the original version with Spanish subtitles.

Molière returns to the Instituto Francés with a screening of The Miser, as part of the celebration of the 400th anniversary of his birth, staged by Lilo Baur. It will be possible to rediscover this classic play, broadcast from the legendary Comédie Française in Paris. Continuing his critique of mankind, in this play first performed in 1668, Molière turned his attention to greed. As always, with his characteristic eye, the playwright personified vice and once again offered a satire of his contemporaries.

This classic of French literature tells how Harpagon, a wealthy and avaricious widower, makes his children suffer multiple privations in order to protect his fortune. His greed gets in the way of the romantic plans of his two children: Elisa, in love with Valerius, a Neapolitan gentleman in his father’s service as a butler, and Cleanto, in love with Mariana, a young orphan without fortune. When Harpagón learns that his son is his rival in the conquest of the beautiful Mariana and that a box full of gold has been stolen from him, he is filled with fury and leaves his entire family shocked by his behaviour. Tickets can be purchased at this link.
