The COP27 presidency has chosen the Third Vice-President and Minister for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, as “facilitator” of the negotiations for adaptation to the impacts of climate change.
Ribera was elected during the XXVII Conference of the Parties (COP27) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which is held this week in Sharm El-Sheik (Egypt), as reported yesterday by the Ministry in a press release. The Vice President will perform the task together with Shauna Aminath, Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology of the Maldives. This is the fifth time that the Vice President has been appointed by the Conference Chair as a facilitator in the negotiations.
The role of the facilitators is to accelerate and push for agreement in the negotiations on the key items on the Conference agendas. Adaptation, along with the Loss and Damage from climate change impacts agenda, has been one of the focal points of this COP and one of the main requests from African countries.
“We must build on the Glasgow agreements and concretize an assessment system that advances the global objective of adaptation,” stated Ribera. “The decision of this COP must include a work program that serves as a guide to measure impacts, risks and vulnerability, and establishes how to take forward the planning of countries and the implementation of measures,” she added.
