Vox parliamentary group in the Congress asked the Government a series of questions to explain why and who gave the order to allow 150 kilos of packages from the United Kingdom to enter Gibraltar without inspection.

The question, signed by José María Figaredo, Alberto Asarta, Víctor González Coello de Portugal, Victor Manuel Sánchez del Real, Agustín Rosety and Emilio José del Valle, refers to the information, reported by Noticias Gibraltar, on the retention, last October, for two weeks at the Gibraltar border of 150 kilos of packages, which the United Kingdom wanted to send to the Governor of the colony, as a diplomatic bag.

The material was kept by the Customs Service until instructions were received, as it was not a diplomatic bag which, according to the Vienna Convention, can only be sent from one state to its embassies or consulates in another country.

After a fortnight at the fence, the packages were cleared for passage to their intended recipient, but not as a diplomatic bag, as The Diplomat reported. The material, however, was not inspected.

Now, the Vox MPs are asking the Government, in particular, for a written reply, “for what reasons have the packages in question been allowed to enter the colony of Gibraltar without having been inspected?”

Likewise, they want to know “which professional position authorised the passage without inspection of packages that were not considered diplomatic bags” and whether “there was any communication or instruction from the government to the Spanish agents”.

Finally, Vox asks “how will this precedent affect future cases, especially when the Gibraltar border is now a Schengen border with a third country?
