The Government has appointed María Cristina Pérez Gutiérrez, until recently ambassador to Costa Rica, to the post of Ambassador-at-Large for the Caribbean Strategy.
Cristina Pérez was born in Zaragoza, on July 5, 1965. She graduated in Law from the Complutense University of Madrid and entered the Diplomatic Career in June 1995. She has held various positions abroad, including that of Spanish ambassador to Costa Rica from October 2018 to 2022. Apart from that, she was embassy secretary at the Embassy of Spain in Beijing (2001 to 2005), embassy secretary at the Embassy of Spain in Bogota (2005- 2008) and counselor at the Permanent Representation of Spain to the European Union (2011-2015).
At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, she was director general of Sustainable Development Policies at the Secretariat of State for International Cooperation and for Ibero-America and the Caribbean between 2017 and 2018. She has also held the positions of advisory member in the Cabinet of the Secretary of State for International Cooperation and for Ibero-America (2016 to 2017), deputy director general of Multilateral Organizations in Ibero-America (2010 to 2011) and advisory member in the Cabinet of the Secretary of State for Ibero-America (2008 to 2010).
