The Government has accepted a new Russian ambassador to Spain in order to “keep open” diplomatic channels with Moscow, according to diplomatic sources, who did not reveal his name.

As The Diplomat reported, the current Russian ambassador in Madrid, Yuri Korchagin, announced to the Spanish authorities that he would be stepping down after ten years in the post, after Moscow requested the go-ahead to appoint a new diplomatic representative. Yesterday. Antena 3 reported that the Council of Ministers last Tuesday gave the placet to the new ambassador proposed by Vladimir Putin’s government.

The aforementioned sources explained that the government has given its agrément for a new ambassador because, “it is a way of keeping diplomatic channels open”, which is where the government wants “peace to return” after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“If the peace we all want comes, it will come through diplomacy. Spain is not going to cut any bridges to stop this war”, Moncloa stressed.

For their part, sources at the Russian Embassy in Madrid have told Europa Press that they have not yet received “official notification” from the Spanish Government.
