The president of the Spanish governmen and PSOE leader Pedro Sánchez will be the next president of the Socialist International, replacing Yorgos Papandreou, as no other alternative candidates have come forward to head the organisation.

Given the absence of other candidates, no elections will be necessary and Sánchez will be formally appointed to the post at the 26th Congress of the Socialist International, which will take place from 25-27 November in Madrid,

Pedro Sánchez, who will hold the post for the next four years, will thus become the first Spaniard to preside over an organisation that currently brings together 132 social democratic, socialist and labour political parties from all over the world with the aim of “consolidating” this type of policy.

Socialist sources said yesterday that the President of the Government’s intention is to give the Socialist International a more “solid base” as well as to increase the “influence” of this organisation in important international forums such as the UN and to work to ensure the return of parties such as the German Social Democratic Party.
