To celebrate Samhain, the Embassy of Ireland is presenting the Halloween is Irish event at Chamberí metro station in Madrid from 28th to 31st October.

Metro de Madrid, Turismo de Irlanda and the Interacting theatre company are offering a unique experience in which visitors will discover the Irish origins and traditions of Samhain, while celebrating the 125th anniversary of the publication of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The actors will guide you through the season and you will enjoy learning with them the history of this Irish festival.

The Embassy encourages those attending the event to come in costume to add to the fun. During the visit there will be prizes from Primark and, thanks to a competition organised by Tourism Ireland, the chance to win flights for 2 to Dublin, with 2 nights hotel accommodation and complimentary tickets to visit the famous Book of Kells at Trinity College.

Samhain is the most important festival of Celtic origin from the pagan period in Europe until its conversion to Christianity, where the night of 31 October to 1 November served as a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Celtic culture and was considered the Celtic New Year, which began the dark season.

Tickets are free, but you must book a time on the Metro de Madrid website when the tour starts on Friday 21 October, from 9 a.m. onwards. The tour will last approximately 40 minutes and will be in Spanish. Early booking is recommended, as it is expected to be a very popular event and tickets will sell out quickly.
