On Thursday 3 November at 12 noon, the Instituto Cervantes in Madrid (Calle Alcalá, 49) will celebrate in its auditorium the 80th anniversary of the Instituto Caro y Cuervo, a Colombian institution dedicated to postgraduate higher education.
This institute was created on 25 August 1942 and since then has been housed in the Casa Cuervo Urisarri, an 18th century building in the centre of Bogotá, which houses exhibitions and was the birthplace of Cuervo (1844-1911), writer, philologist and linguist.
Luis García Montero, director of the Instituto Cervantes; Eduardo Ávila Navarrete, Colombian ambassador to Spain; Jorge Volpi, director of the Centro de Estudios Mexicanos UNAM-España, and Martín Alonso Gómez Orozco, delegate in Spain of the Instituto Caro y Cuervo, will take part in the event. Free admission until full capacity is reached.
The event celebrating the eightieth anniversary of the Instituto Caro y Cuervo will draw attention to the contribution it has been making since 1942 to safeguarding Colombia’s linguistic heritage through training, research and the social appropriation of knowledge, and to the way in which its Delegation in Spain allows the results of its work to be projected not only to Spanish territory, but also to non-Spanish-speaking countries thanks to the support of the Instituto Cervantes through its network of centres. The collaboration between the Instituto Caro y Cuervo and the Instituto Cervantes will be discussed, with a presentation of the balance of this collaboration and highlighting some of its most important milestones.
