For the sixth consecutive year, the Economic and Cultural Office of Taipei in Spain collaborates with the Homesession Art Space and Artist in Residence in Barcelona, presenting until today the exhibition and performance of the Taiwanese artist Ya Nung Huang entitled Quartet, the result of her artistic residency focused on sound experimentation. Admission is free until full capacity is reached at Homesession’s headquarters, Carrer de la Creu dels Molers 15, Barcelona.
Quartet is a sound project based on their coexistence and observation of the city of Barcelona, focused on four different aspects of “local creation” and “sense of place”. Through their coexistence with the environment and using the sensorial experience, language is the central part of the project. Starting from three languages (Spanish, Catalan and English), the most commonly heard languages in the streets of Barcelona, the artist has found possibilities to generate dialogues in different ways. Through the exercise of juxtaposing the three languages, she translates the language into electronic sound, until one of them disappears, generating a random but harmonious rhythm.
Born in Taipei, multidisciplinary artist Ya Nung Huang often combines her works with video, the use of the body and the voice; she is also a musical composer, and a virtuoso player of the traditional wind instrument Suona. She has extensive experience performing in orchestral ensembles in Taiwan, but Ya Nung tends to break out of the framework and integrate other types of music beyond classical or traditional music. As for the art of experimentation, he constantly tries to use the concept of “sound” instead of “music”, adding also physical and spatial interaction to try out behavioural improvisation.
