The University of Seville’s Faculty of Economics and Business Studies hosted the third “Encounters X Europe” event, which focused on the ecological transition.
“Encuentro X Europa” is a space for dialogue set up by Canal Europa, the digital media specialising in information on European institutions; Talent for the Future, the platform promoted by civil society organisations to give young people a voice; and the State Secretariat for the European Union, with the aim of giving young people the opportunity to get to know the future of the EU-27, thanks to the participation of renowned speakers.
The event was attended by Virginia Moreno, Head of Institutional Relations and External Relations of ECOEMBES; Antonio Aguilera, Secretary General of the Savia Foundation; and Adriana Rodríguez, Member of Talent for Sustainability and Research Associate at Climate Strategy & Partners. Elsa Arnaiz, President of Talent for the Future, also moderated the colloquium.
One of the most critical vectors of the European Union today is the Ecological Transition, which involves a green, effective and fair energy transition. For this reason, one of the great challenges for the future is whether MidCat is the solution to Europe’s problems, whether nuclear power should be among the options, what the cap on gas or investment in renewables could be. These are issues that, although they have a national impact, are of European significance.
Likewise, as was pointed out during the talk, the current energy crisis has highlighted the dependence on fossil fuels, which has opened up the debate as to what extent this is an opportunity to give a boost to renewables, or on the contrary, will this slow down the ecological transition?
During the event, young people were also given a voice, and they pointed out that the commitment to renewables is the most effective way to accelerate the energy transition. In addition, they pointed out that we must bet on the local, on our strengths, on Spain and on photovoltaics.
Finally, it was stressed that we must focus on R&D, and that the rural world should not suffer more social, economic and environmental consequences as a result.
Over the next few weeks, new events will be held in different universities in Spain, which will address issues such as the demographic challenge and the Spanish presidency of the European Union.
All the meetings will be available on Canal Europa (www.canaleuropa.es) and its mobile applications.
