In a communiqué issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Spanish government states that it ‘welcomes the conclusion of the historic agreement between Lebanon and Israel on the delimitation of maritime spaces in the Eastern Mediterranean, which will allow the use of natural resources for mutual benefit, in line with the vision of cooperation and integration in the Mediterranean that Spain has always advocated’.
The Government trusts that this important agreement will also contribute to the promotion and consolidation of the Lebanese political process, through the regular functioning of the constitutional institutions and mechanisms, which will allow the election of the new President of the Republic and the new Government of the country to be concluded without delay.
The Government highlights the successful mediation carried out by the United States and the determination of the leaders of both countries in their commitment to peace and stability in the region. Spain also reiterates its firm commitment to this stability, especially through Spain’s participation in UNIFIL, its aid to the Lebanese people and its constant political support for a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the region, for which today’s agreement may represent a fundamental step.
