The Government of Spain “strongly” condemned the attacks carried out yesterday by the Russian armed forces against Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, as well as those perpetrated in the early hours of Sunday morning against residential areas of the Ukrainian city of Zaporiyia.
These attacks, as denounced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement, “have caused the death of numerous people and dozens of wounded among the civilian population, including minors”, so “those responsible for these acts must answer for them”.
“The Government of Spain calls on the Russian authorities to respect the basic principles of International Law, especially International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights, by ceasing their attacks against the population, residential areas and basic civilian targets and infrastructure,” the statement continued.
“Spain once again reiterates its firm support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders, and once again calls on Russia to cease its armed aggression and proceed to the immediate, complete and unconditional withdrawal of its troops from all Ukrainian territory,” it concluded.
For her part, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said yesterday she was “shocked and appalled by the ruthless attacks in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities.” “Once again, Russia has shown the world what it stands for: terror and brutality. Those responsible must be held accountable,” she continued. “We mourn the victims and I send my deepest condolences to our Ukrainian friends. I know that Ukrainians will not be intimidated,” she added. “Ukrainians know that we will stand by them, as long as it takes,” she concluded.
Likewise, EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy and Commission Vice-President Josep Borrell was “deeply shocked by Russia’s attacks on civilians in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities.” “These acts have no place in the 21st century. I condemn them in the strongest possible terms,” he continued. “We stand with Ukraine. Additional EU military support is on the way,” he assured.
