The war in Ukraine has been a severe test for all the countries of the European Union. Despite this, far from wavering or weakening their ties, the group of nations has been able to rise to the occasion and has responded forcefully. However, the conflict has brought a number of important changes for the EU. Josep Borrell, the EU’s foreign and security policy chief and a privileged witness to the whole process of metamorphosis, will reflect on all these issues at this event.
The Charles of Antwerp Memorial Lecture, instituted in 1990 in the name of its founder, has been entrusted on each occasion to an important figure who has distinguished himself or herself by his or her contributions to the construction of European unity in its differential and inalienable dimensions. The Europeanist spirit has been a constant in the trajectory of the Charles of Antwerp Foundation. Founded in 1594 as a refuge for travellers, pilgrims and the sick who came to Madrid from the Former Seventeen Provinces of the Netherlands, it has been a meeting place for different European cultures, seeking their connection with Spain.
