The Diplomat
As is now a tradition in the diplomatic world, the Embassy of Poland once again celebrated last Thursday the event known as The Polish Apple Festival.
The event was born as a tribute to the Polish producers of this tasty fruit, who are present every year at the prestigious trade fair Fruit Attraction in Madrid. The aim of the Festival is none other than to widen the circle of Polish apple lovers and Polish cuisine by conquering their sense of taste. The Polish ambassador, Anna Sroka, emphasised during her brief speech that “in almost every apple drink in the world there is at least a drop of juice squeezed from an apple picked in a Polish orchard”.
This year’s event featured a special guest, chef Sylwia Stachyra, winner of Top Chef Poland 2018, who offered guests a feast of flavours encapsulated in appetizers of apple juice with nettle; bison herb vodka and elderberry; herring with apple and sultana; cod in Serrano ham with apple powder, accompanied by Lublin gnocchi with Lublin cider; pork tenderloin with apple puree with roasted cabbage and a touch of sherry, and for dessert, bison herb cream with apple cider pickle, vanilla biscuit. A real treat for the senses. The Spanish-Polish broadcaster, journalist and actor Conrado Moreno was in charge of presenting the event.
Poland is the world’s leading exporter of the fruit, the largest in Europe and one of the largest apple producers in the world, with almost one million tonnes exported to international markets by 2021. That year, Polish apples reached consumers in 67 countries. Poland exports half of all apples destined for international markets to EU countries.
