The Diplomat
Eamon Gilmore, the European Union’s special representative for the promotion of human rights, peace and stability, said during his visit to Spain last week that “it is our turn to contribute to EU peace operations and to spread the values of democracy and human rights”.
During a reception hosted by Irish Ambassador Frank Smyth, Gilmore gave an extensive overview of his country’s evolution from colonial times to the present day, when Ireland has become the second highest GDP per capita in the EU, behind only Luxembourg. “We are now net contributors,” he said, while being proud of his traditions “but committed to the European Union“.
