The Spanish government condemned the coup d’état in Burkina Faso and the dissolution of the country’s transitional bodies.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a communiqué after a group of soldiers from the Patriotic Movement for Salvation and Restoration (MPSR), led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré, staged a coup d’état on Friday and deposed the leader of the Burkina Faso junta and the country’s transitional president, Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba.

The communiqué indicates that Spain considers that what happened “represents a new obstacle on the road to the fulfilment of the transition process in that country”. It also joins ECOWAS in calling for respect for the electoral timetable and the return to constitutional order in Burkina Faso in 2024.

Finally, Spain ‘reiterates its commitment to the fight against terrorism and other causes of instability in the Sahel, as well as to socio-economic development for the benefit of the populations of the region’.
