Brazil’s ambassador to Spain, Orlando Leite Ribeiro, stressed on Wednesday during a reception to celebrate its National Day and the 200th anniversary of its independence, that both countries are “destined to walk together for the prosperity of our peoples”.

In his first reception as ambassador in Madrid, Leite Ribeiro underlined his intention to “strengthen and deepen our bilateral cooperation in all fields, political, economic, commercial, cultural and educational”.

After highlighting “the strength, intensity and multiplicity of the relations that unite us“, which are now 188 years old, Leite Ribeiro pointed out that “we have a mature, strategic and historic relationship with Spain, in which we share values and culture”, which is why he affirmed that “we are destined to walk together for the prosperity of our peoples“.

The head of the Brazilian Mission referred to the presence of Spanish companies in his country, which he said “are key to development” in sectors such as energy and communications. Among them, he mentioned Mapfre, Repsol Santander and Telefonica – “companies that are already a bit Brazilian”, he joked – and welcomed others “that are following in the footsteps of the previous ones” such as Estrella de Galicia and Air Europa.

The reception was attended by numerous ambassadors, Spanish diplomats and representatives of major Spanish companies. Among them were the ambassadors of Argentina, Guatemala, Haiti and Hungary, as well as the State Secretary for Latin America, the Caribbean and Spanish in the World, Juan Fernández-Trigo, whom the ambassador thanked for his presence at the event; the Director General for Latin America, Enrique Yturriaga; the Deputy Director General for Mercosur Countries, José Luis García Galán; the former Foreign Minister Trinidad Jiménez; and the Ambassador-at-Large for Ibero-American Summits and Ibero-American Spaces, Carlos Abella.
