Centro Sefarad-Israel celebrates European Day of Jewish Culture

September 6, 2022
in Entertainment, Leisure

On the occasion of the European Day of Jewish Culture, the Choir of the Jewish Community of Madrid will offer a concert at the Centro Sefarad-Israel next Monday 12th September at 6 p.m., under the title A través del tiempo (Through time).

The repertoire to be performed will include compositions from the Sephardic tradition in Judeo-Spanish, as well as musical themes referring to the memory of the victims of the Holocaust such as Eli, Eli. Israeli songs such as Shir lashalom will also be included.

Throughout its 54 years of existence, the choir has sung at countless events, such as weddings, cultural events in Alcalá de Henares, Segovia, Toledo, carrying and transmitting the deep-rooted Sephardic legacy. The choir has also performed in the Senate and in the Juan Carlos I Park, remembering the victims of the Shoa, and the Or Hanukkah evenings.

Currently made up of some 20 choristers, the choir of the Jewish Community of Madrid has evolved in parallel with the development of its Community. Five years ago Merche Benzaquén took over the direction of the choir. New friends have joined the choir from Venezuela, Mexico, Argentina and the United States. Free admission, prior registration at this link.
