The realist painter Amalia Avia returns to Madrid with the exhibition El Japón en Los Ángeles. Los archivos de Amalia Avia, which opens today at the Sala Alcalá 31 in Madrid (Calle Alcalá, 31).

The exhibition brings together 113 pieces and reviews the painter’s work from a contemporary point of view without conforming to the label of Amalia Avia as a realist painter. The images of the doors and façades of her buildings remind us of the Madrid that the artist observed, photographed and painted.

The curator of the exhibition, Estrella de Diego, looks for other perspectives that delineate the use of photography in her work. “They are photographs that never present any literalness; a starting point for capturing, later, through the paintings, the atmospheres in which she is a master: extraordinary, arrested times”, Estrella de Diego points out. In the end, Avia did not portray places, objects or passers-by, but archived them in her memory.
