The Spanish Embassy in Haiti has remained closed to the public since Wednesday 14th, due to the demonstrations that have taken place in Port-au-Prince.

The Twitter account of the Embassy announced on the 14th the decision to temporarily close its premises, keeping the consular emergency telephone number operational for Spanish citizens.

Subsequently, both on Thursday and Friday, the diplomatic representation issued tweets stating that it remained closed to the public. The decision was taken because of the continuing instability in the Haitian capital, which has been the scene of violent protests.

Port-au-Prince was paralysed by the announcement of an increase in the price of petroleum products, which will also lead to a further rise in the price of basic necessities and public transport, although the date of implementation is still unknown. This will make daily life even more difficult in Haiti, the poorest country in the Americas, which is experiencing a serious economic, socio-political and institutional crisis, aggravated after the assassination last year of the then President Jovenel Moïse.

In addition, armed gangs in and around Port-au-Prince have killed at least 300 people and forced more than 3,000 to flee their homes.
