The Government of Spain yesterday congratulated Abdoualaye Bathily on his appointment as the new Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Libya and head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL). The Senegalese-born Bathily was appointed earlier this month by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, replacing Slovakian Ján Kubiš.

In a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Government of Pedro Sanchez, wished Abdoualaye Bathily “the greatest success in the performance of his function”, for which it offered him “its full support and loyal collaboration, as it has done with his predecessors in office”. It also recognized “the great effort and excellent work” of the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General for Libya, Stephanie Williams, in favor of a political solution to the Libyan conflict.

The Government of Spain also reiterated its determination to continue supporting the Libyan people and the United Nations in its efforts to “achieve a political and definitive solution that guarantees the unity and national reconciliation necessary to overcome the political, economic and security crisis in which Libya finds itself.”
