The Diplomat
Eduardo Ávila, one of the people closest to Colombian President Gustavo Petro, will be Colombia’s new ambassador to Spain, according to several Colombian media reports.
A native of Tunja, the capital of the department of Boyacá, Ávila was directly involved in the election campaign that brought Petro to the Presidency of Colombia and is currently linked to the company Setronics, which specialises in communication and electronic security services, where he holds the position of commercial director.
The post of Colombian ambassador in Madrid has been vacant since Luis Guillermo Plata left his post, for which he had been appointed by the previous president, Iván Duque, after the results of the presidential elections were known.
Colombian presidents traditionally attach great importance to diplomatic representation in Spain, as trade relations between the two countries are very important. On 24 August, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited Bogotá, which was interpreted as a show of support for the new progressive government led by Petro. The two leaders will coincide on 21 August at a United Nations forum in New York.
