Spain has “deplored” the cyber-attacks against Albania last July, targeting critical infrastructure and government entities in that country.
In a statement, the Foreign Ministry warned yesterday that such activities in cyberspace “aimed at destabilizing a NATO ally and an EU candidate country” are contrary to internationally agreed standards of responsible state behavior in cyberspace and are therefore “totally unacceptable.”
“Spain wishes to express its deep solidarity with the Albanian government and people and stands ready, together with our NATO allies and EU partners, to provide assistance to help Albania overcome the consequences of this serious incident,” it added.
Last September 7, Albanian authorities reported that public institutions and bodies had suffered several cyber-attacks on July 15. The targets were the websites of the prime minister, the parliament and the foreigners’ services. The government called it a criminal, organized and sophisticated act. Russia was initially blamed, but cyber-attack experts indicated that the origin may have been Iran, which resulted in the severing of diplomatic relations between Tirana and Tehran.
