Taiwan calls on international community to support its participation in UN Assembly

The Republic of China (Taiwan) is once again appealing to the international community, according to a statement sent to The Diplomat, “to support its participation in the 77th United Nations (UN) General Assembly, taking place from 13-26 September in New York, from which Taiwan is excluded due to pressure from China”.

The Taiwanese government wants to focus on showing the international community that, ‘as a beacon of democracy in Asia and a force for good in the world, Taiwan is a valuable partner that can help overcome the global challenges now facing the world‘, citing among others the covid-19 pandemic, the fight against climate change, supply chain disruptions and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Taiwanese government stresses that “China’s increasing rhetorical and military intimidation, intensified by its military exercises around Taiwan, is endangering regional peace and stability, with a consequent impact on the world’s security and well-being.”

“To deny participation in the UN to those who have the capacity to contribute,” the statement says, “is a moral and material loss to the world, and it is therefore necessary for the UN to see Taiwan for what it is: a valuable and worthy partner, willing and able to cooperate with and contribute to international society”.

“Therefore”, concludes, “the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) believes that now is the time for the UN to welcome Taiwan and, in fairness to the 23.5 million Taiwanese, to give it the place it deserves in this international organisation so that all countries can work together for the global good.
