The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, yesterday received the members of the latest promotion of members of the Diplomatic Career, in which, for the first time, there are more women than men.

On his Twitter account, the minister thanked them for choosing the diplomatic profession and added: “We are counting on your enthusiasm, energy and vocation for public service to continue working to defend the interests of Spain and the Spanish people”.

The 74th graduating class of the Diplomatic School is the first to have more women than men. Of the 35 places available, 21 have been obtained by women and 14 by men.

The number of women entering the Diplomatic Career has been increasing over the last few years, and the last promotion, the 73rd, was the first to have 17 men and 17 women.

In this promotion, the “number one” is a woman – Paloma Díaz Topete – and of the top twelve positions, only three are occupied by men.

According to data provided by the Ministry in March last year, Spain currently has 687 male and 279 female diplomats.
