‘Vigil in Benicarló’, by Manuel Azaña, President of the 2nd Republic

Author: Manuel Azaña

La velada en Benicarló (Vigil in Benicarló) presents, in the form of a Socratic dialogue, a profound reflection on the Spanish Civil War, its ethical implications and its historical and social roots. The text was written in the midst of the war, during the insurrection of May 1937, and is in practice a condensation of Manuel Azaña’s ethical-political ideology, in which he puts into the mouths of his characters some of the ideas and problems that most concerned him as a politician and intellectual.

For all these reasons, La velada is not only a philosophical and literary text, but also a historical document of the first order, essential for understanding the deep divisions that led to the collapse of Spanish society.
