On Friday 9th and Sunday 11th of this month (at 8pm and 6pm, respectively), Teatro de la Zarzuela presents the four-act lyrical tragicomedy in concert version.
This piece with music by Felipe Pedrell and libretto based on the tragicomedy of Calisto and Melibea, by Fernando de Rojas, is the one chosen by Teatro de la Zarzuela to open this season. And it’s a strict premiere, as it will be performed for the first time, because although it was planned to be premiered at the Liceo in 1902, it never saw the light of day. All that was heard were a couple of scenes that Pau Casal included in a concert in 1921 to pay tribute to the composer. It is a work of great importance that influenced later composers, in which Pedrell embodies his idea of the national opera. In La Celestina, the composer’s enormous respect for the original 15th century work by Fernando de Rojas is evident. The main roles will be played by Maite Beaumont (Celestina); Miren Urbieta-Vega (Melibea); Andeka Gorrotxategi (Calisto), and Juan Jesús Rodríguez (Sempronio). Tickets can be purchased at this link.
