The Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, will arrive today in Bogotá, where he will have the opportunity to meet with the new Colombian president, the leftist Gustavo Petro, in the first stage of a tour that will also take him to Ecuador and Honduras, as reported by The Diplomat.

Following the victory of Petro and his vice-president Francia Márquez, who took office on 7 May, the Spanish Prime Minister congratulated them and expressed his commitment to continue strengthening the ties that unite the two countries.

On top of that, the Spanish government had already expressed to the new Colombian government its willingness to help in the peace negotiations with the guerrilla group National Liberation Army (ELN), which began two weeks ago in Havana.

The President of the Government had already visited Colombia in August 2018 as part of his first visit to the region after his arrival at the Moncloa Palace, when Iván Duque was President of the Ibero-American country.

On the other hand, it will be the first time he visits Ecuador and Honduras since he assumed the Presidency of the Government.

From Colombia, Pedro Sánchez will travel to Quito, where he will meet with the Ecuadorian President, Guillermo Lasso.

The last stage of the tour will take the head of the Executive to Tegucigalpa, where he is scheduled to meet with the country’s president, Xiomara Castro, who has been in power since January.

Pedro Sánchez will discuss bilateral matters with the three Ibero-American leaders, but also economic and trade issues, as evidenced by the fact that he will be accompanied on the trip from Madrid by a group of Spanish businessmen.
