After visiting Colombia and Ecuador, Pedro Sánchez ended his tour yesterday in Tegucigalpa, where the President of the Government held a working meeting with the President of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, and met with representatives of Spanish companies present in Honduras.
On his first official visit to Honduras, Sánchez reaffirmed Spain’s commitment to Honduras and to Central America in general, during a joint statement to the press with Xiomara Castro. In it, both reported on the signing of a memorandum of understanding to boost health cooperation between the two countries and strengthen health systems in Honduras.
The President of the Spanish Government, who welcomed the results of the agreement on the management of migratory flows with Honduras, also reported that in the coming months both countries plan to hold an economic forum to boost trade and investment relations.
In fact, Sánchez, accompanied by the Minister of Industry, Reyes Maroto, met in the morning with a group of representatives of Spanish companies present in Honduras, to whom he assured that “they will have the full support of the Spanish Government”.
The President also met with representatives of the Coordinating Committee of Spanish Cooperation Actors in Honduras. Development cooperation is another of the fundamental axes of relations between the two countries, and for this reason, Sánchez stressed that Spain will maintain its current commitment to allocate 215 million euros until 2023.
Finally, the head of the Spanish government insisted that “Spain is firmly committed to promoting relations with Latin America both bilaterally and with the EU“. And he reiterated his intention to organise ‘the first European Union-CELAC Summit since the last one was held in 2015’, taking advantage of the fact that Spain will hold the presidency of the European Council in the second half of 2023.
