“It was always a great honour to play against him because he was simply the best; not only as a player, but also as a human being he was a very important person for me,” said German national football team defender Lothar Matthäus, referring to Argentinean star Diego Armando Maradona.
The Argentinean ambassador Ricardo Alfonsín provided the premises of the embassy for the handover to the Museo Legends of the Maradona jersey he exchanged with Matthäus on the occasion of the 1986 FIFA World Cup Final in Mexico.
The elegant German player also said: “This very important relic will have a perfect place in this museum. Diego Maradona was not only a great football legend, a friendship grew up between us. He was unique, there is no doubt about it, Diego is recognised all over the world as a legend and that is why I am very proud to be here today”.
For his part, the Argentinean ambassador said: “I simply have to thank you for allowing us to participate in this event and Matthäus for selflessly donating Maradona’s jersey, his gesture speaks of his sporting spirit and his love for football. It is a great joy for all of us to be able to have this shirt”.
According to Marcelo Ordás, president of Legends, this Mexico 86 Maradona shirt, which he described as “the most important relic in the history of football”, will be on display in Argentina as well as in Madrid, as “it must go to be enjoyed by all Argentinians”.
Also present at the event were the executive general director of LaLiga, Óscar Mayo; and, as host, the journalist Víctor Hugo Morales, who narrated the goals of the unforgettable Diego like no one else. In addition, AFA president Claudio Tapia sent an emotional message to the player Lothar Matthäus via video and once again highlighted the figure of Maradona.
