The Spanish government yesterday expressed its “categorical” condemnation and “absolute” rejection of reports of the murder and torture of Ukrainian prisoners of war held in the Olenivka detention centre in the Donetsk region.

In a communiqué issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it is recalled that “the murder and ill-treatment of prisoners are war crimes under the Rome Statute” and states that if the reports are confirmed, “those responsible must be brought to justice”.

Similarly, the communiqué assures that “Spain will cooperate as much as possible with the competent international bodies to ensure that violations of international humanitarian law do not go unpunished”.

The Ukrainian authorities have asked the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to investigate the attack on the prison of the self-proclaimed Republic of Donetsk in which 50 Ukrainian prisoners of war were killed.

Kiev blames the deaths on Moscow, which strongly denies this and blames the attack on Ukraine and the United States, which supplied the Ukrainian army with the HIMARS missiles used.
