Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán believes that “the Ukrainians will never win a war against Russia with American weapons and training officers“. Speaking at the 31st Free Summer Camp for Students and University Students in Bálványos, the Hungarian head of government explained that this assessment is based “simply on the fact that the Russian army has an asymmetrical advantage”.
In a long speech, distributed to the media by his press office, in which in addition to the war in Ukraine he referred to immigration, covid, the economic crisis and the European Union, Orbán criticised the strategy of NATO and the European Union in the face of Russian aggression, stressing that “sanctions will not bring Moscow down” while “Europe is mired in economic and political problems, and governments are falling like dominoes“. He also stressed that rising energy prices will begin to make themselves felt, “generating discontent”. Finally, Orbán said that “the ability of the Americans” to “urge the world to get on the right side of history” has ceased to exist. He cited as an example that ‘the Chinese, the Indians, the Brazilians, South Africa, the Arab world and Africa are not there’.
Orbán, who considered it important to understand “why the Russians did what they did” – although he added that this does not mean that it should be shared” – regretted that both Donald Trump and Angela Merkel are no longer at the head of their respective governments. “If Donald Trump had been the president of the United States and Angela Merkel the German chancellor, then this war would never have broken out. But we were unlucky, so now we are in this war”.
