The Government has already invested almost 50 million euros for the actions of the Modernization Plan in the border perimeter of Ceuta and Melilla, promoted by the Council of Ministers in January 2019.

The Council of Ministers yesterday approved the execution of the last works of reform of the border perimeter of Ceuta, which contemplates the reinforcement of some points of the outer fence with anti-climb mesh, the demolition of three intermediate guardhouses located in the area between fences, the placement of locks and the relocation of poles of the closed circuit TV systems (CCTV) to improve the points of vision in the border perimeter. The estimated cost to deal with the execution of these works amounts to 4,094,312.73 euros.

“The technical studies derived from the needs raised by the agents protecting the border perimeter justify the need to imminently implement these complementary measures to reinforce security in the area, thus being accredited the declaration of emergency for the contracting of the services foreseen”, the Executive specified.

The Modernization Plan in the border perimeter of Ceuta and Melilla, approved by the Council of Ministers in January 2019, has been the first comprehensive action and technological modernization undertaken in the area in recent decades, since no major improvement work had been executed in the area since 2005. The actions of this plan as a whole have involved an investment of 48,761,457.65 euros.

The Plan has been executed practically in its entirety. The measures implemented include the replacement of the concertinas, the reinforcement of security in all sections of the border perimeters of Ceuta and Melilla, the implementation of the new automatic control system for the entry and exit of pedestrians at the Beni Enzar (Melilla) and El Tarajal (Ceuta) posts, and improvements to the closed circuit television (CCTV) systems at both borders. Specifically, a new CCTV system has been implemented in Ceuta, while in Melilla the CCTV system has been expanded and the fiber optic network has been improved.
