Diplomat Maria Margarete Gosse is the new German ambassador to Spain, replacing Wolfgang Dold, who had been in our country for almost four years.
Dold, who now takes up the post of German ambassador to Mexico, has been very active during his time in Madrid in promoting bilateral relations and also dealing with the affairs of the German Presidency of the EU in the second half of 2020. Maria Gosse, for her part, was until now Director General of the Central Services of the German Foreign Office, and will become the first woman to head the German Embassy in Madrid.
The new ambassador, who will arrive in the Spanish capital in the coming weeks, has extensive diplomatic experience, which has taken her to various countries, including France, where she was consul in Paris, and has held other posts in the Foreign Ministry, such as that of delegate for the area of Law and Consular Affairs.
Maria Gosse, who is married to a Spaniard, was posted to Spain at the beginning of her career as a diplomat in the 1990s, holding the post of deputy consul in Barcelona.
After her arrival in Madrid, according to reliable sources that The Diplomat has learned, the new ambassador’s duties will include preparing the Spanish-German summit, which is due to take place in Spain, possibly in early October, with the presence of the German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, and the president of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, as well as a large number of ministers.
Likewise, she will have to prepare details of the state visit that the King and Queen of Spain will make to Germany in mid-October, during which they will inaugurate the Frankfurt Book Fair, which this year has our country as a guest.
