The Spanish government yesterday expressed its support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in a communiqué issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
In the communiqué, the government welcomes the “excellent development” of bilateral relations over the past 30 years, “a period,” it says, “during which a solid political relationship has been built and economic and cultural exchanges have increased”.
He also points out that, following the pandemic, there have been numerous contacts between the authorities of the two countries, citing the recent meeting between the respective foreign ministers in May, the telephone conversation between the President of the Government and the President of Georgia in February this year, and the meeting between the heads of government in Madrid in May 2021.
“These successes have also been transferred to the economic sphere, since Spain has been the largest investor in Georgia in the first four months of 2022,” the communiqué stresses.
On the occasion of the anniversary, the Spanish government “takes this opportunity to reaffirm its firm defence of Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and expresses its desire to continue to promote our relations in all areas, both bilaterally and with the European Union”.
The communiqué ended by expressing the government’s wishes for peace, well-being and prosperity “for the friendly people of Georgia on this important occasion for our bilateral relations”.
Georgia has a resident ambassador in Madrid, while Spain only has a diplomatic antenna in Tibilisi, although, according to the General State Budget, the aim is to upgrade it to an embassy this year.
