With the screening tonight at 10pm of the film Piel de asno (Donkey Skin), starring Catherine Deneuve in 1967, the Instituto Francés invites you to (re)discover French cinema through the films of legendary actresses. Every week in July, open-air screenings await in the courtyard of the Institute.
The Great French Actresses series kicks off with this film directed by Jacques Demy, which tells how, on her deathbed, the Queen makes the King promise not to remarry until he finds a woman who surpasses her in goodness and beauty. Years later, the King realises that the perfect replacement for his wife is his own daughter. The Lilac Fairy, the young princess’s godmother, advises her to ask her father for a gift of wonderful dresses, seemingly impossible to make. But as the King gets the dresses, the princess asks him to give her a cape made from the skin of the banker’s donkey, the main source of wealth in the Kingdom. Reservations can be made at this link.
