Spain yesterday “strongly” condemned the terrorist attacks against the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) perpetrated last Wednesday and Friday, in which two Egyptian and one Jordanian blue helmets were killed and several wounded.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Spanish government expresses its condolences to the families of the dead, to the United Nations and to the governments of Egypt and Jordan, and hopes that the injured will recover as soon as possible.

“The attacks against members of United Nations missions constitute a violation of international humanitarian law. Spain calls on the transitional authorities in Mali to investigate the events and bring those responsible to justice,” the statement said.

Spain, which participates in the Mission with security and military personnel, also stresses “the crucial role of MINUSMA” and the need for it to be able to fulfil without obstacles its mandate to implement the 2015 Peace and Reconciliation Agreement and to stabilise and re-establish state authority in central Mali, as well as “the protection of the civilian population, respect for human rights and international humanitarian law, and the facilitation of humanitarian aid”.

Finally, Spain conveys its concern over the serious deterioration of the security and humanitarian situation in the Sahel and reiterates its firm commitment to the fight against the terrorist threat in the region, as well as the stabilisation and development of the countries that make up the region for the benefit of their populations.
