Luis García Martín, better known as Luisgé Martín, will be in charge of the new Instituto Cervantes center in Los Angeles, USA, which will be inaugurated at the end of this year.

The appointment has been decided by the director of the Instituto Cervantes, Luis García Montero, at the proposal of the secretary general, Carmen Noguero, with the agreement of the secretary of State for International Cooperation and president of the Board of Directors, Pilar Cancela, and after hearing the opinion of the Board of Directors.

Luis García Martín (Madrid, 1962) holds a degree in Hispanic philology from the Complutense University of Madrid and a master’s degree in business administration from the Instituto de Empresa. He has experience in the cabinets of the former Minister of Culture Ángeles González-Sinde (2010-2011) and of the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez (2019-2022). His career has been mainly linked to the publishing sector, where he has worked at SM publishing house, Ediciones del Prado or Thinking Heads Group, where he directed its literary agency.

Recognized with the Herralde Novel Prize (2020) for Cien noches, Llanes Travel Prize (2013) with Donde el silencio, Antonio Machado Prize (2009) with the short story Los años más felices and Mario Vargas Llosa Prize (2012) with Los dientes del azar, in 2021 he published his first theatrical work, Amor puro. He also collaborates occasionally as an article writer in various periodicals and has directed the literary magazine EÑE.

The official opening of Cervantes Los Angeles is scheduled for the end of the year. This will bring to seven the number of U.S. cities where the institution is present: New York (1995), Chicago (1996) and Albuquerque (2000); the Aula Cervantes in Seattle (2007), the Observatory of the Spanish Language at Harvard University (Boston, 2013), and the El Paso extension (2021).
