From the 30th of June, the Teatro Reina Victoria (Carrera de San Jerónimo, 24) presents the musical La venganza de Don Mendo, based on the comedy of the same name by Pedro Muñoz Seca, one of Spain’s great 20th century authors.
Under the direction of José Saiz, humour and wit travel in this text that is still just as topical today. Defined by the author himself as a “caricature of tragedy”, La venganza de Don Mendo is, in addition to being extremely popular, an amusing parody of romantic drama with a historical setting.
The play tells how the Castilian knight Don Mendo Salazar, Marquis of Cabra, considers himself outwitted when he discovers that his fiancée, Magdalena, is to marry Don Pero Collado, Duke of Toro. After a fateful encounter, Don Mendo ends up framing himself as a thief and ends up imprisoned and condemned to be walled up on Magdalena’s orders. His tragic fate is altered by his friend, the Marquis of Moncada, who saves him from brutal punishment by deceiving the law.
