Mobilisations and Climate Emergency in the Southern Neighbourhood and Turkey

Casa Árabe presents this evening at 7 p.m. the presentation of the working document entitled Mobilisations and Climate Emergency in the Southern Neighbourhood and Turkey, by the Fundación Alternativas, with the participation of several of the authors of the report. Event in Spanish. Free admission with prior registration.

The document focuses on two of the most relevant and pressing phenomena in the Southern Neighbourhood of the European Union (EU) and Spain: on the one hand, climate change as one of the greatest threats to the socio-political and socio-economic sustainability of the respective countries and societies; on the other hand, social mobilisations as one of the main manifestations of the unrest in these societies, evident in the uprisings of 2010/2011 and beyond.

The paper consists of chapters focusing on the case studies of some Neighbourhood countries – Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt and Lebanon – as well as Turkey, and sections on the state of play and basic conceptualisations. The various analyses consider how climate initiatives have developed in different contexts, and focus in particular on the role of the political system in each case, the existence of mobilisation at different levels, and how issues beyond the purely environmental are articulated, such as those revolving around the concept of ‘climate justice’. The next COP28 will be held in the Egyptian city of Sharm Al Shaikh, and the Arab countries face a challenge that will necessarily involve their respective populations, as well as focusing transnational cooperation in the region and with the EU.

The event will be presented by Irene Lozano, Director General of Casa Árabe, and Vicente Palacio, Director of Foreign Policy at Fundación Alternativas. Itxaso Domínguez de Olazábal, coordinator of the MENA area at Fundación Alternativas and coordinator of the document; Ilgu Ozler, professor at SUNY New Paltz and co-author of the document; Adil Moustaoui, professor at the Complutense University of Madrid and co-author of the document, and Marc Español, correspondent in Cairo and co-author of the report, will speak. The event will be streamed live on the Fundación Alternativas YouTube channel.
