The Government of Spain yesterday congratulated Gustavo Petro on his victory in the second round of the presidential election in Colombia and conveyed its “best wishes for success” during his presidential term, which begins next August 7.
“The Government welcomes the opening of this new stage, in which it hopes to work closely with the new Colombian Government in the construction of social, fair and sustainable policies, as well as in the construction of peace and the respect and protection of the environment,” the Executive said in a statement.
“Spain and Colombia are united by close fraternal ties and by a strategic partnership within the framework of the Ibero-American Community of Nations, for which reason the Government expresses its desire to be able to continue deepening with the new Colombian authorities the solid bilateral relationship and the fruitful collaboration in the Ibero-American and multilateral spheres in favor of our societies and the Ibero-American Community of Nations,” it added.
The Government extends its congratulations “to the Colombian people and institutions for their civic-mindedness during the electoral process, proof of the commitment of Colombians to democracy and to the future of their country”, it concluded.
