Casa Árabe presents a colloquium entitled The Mediterranean and the Arab World in the Face of the Russian Invasion of Ukraine, tomorrow, Tuesday, Tuesday, at 12 noon, in its Ambassadors’ Lounge, on the occasion of the publication of issue 65 of the magazine afkar/ideas, devoted to the issue. The event will be held in English and Spanish, without interpretation.
The event, organised by the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed) and Estudios de Política Exterior, will discuss the issues analysed in the magazine and unveil the new design of the publication. Josep Piqué, co-director of afkar/ideas and managing director of Estudios de Política Exterior; Senén Florensa, co-director of afkar/ideas and executive president of IEMed; Carmen Magariños, director of Cooperation with Africa and Asia at AECID and a member of the diplomatic career since 2007; and Youssef Cherif, deputy director of the Columbia Global Centers in Tunis and political analyst specialising in North African affairs, will be speaking on the subject. The Director General of Casa Árabe, Irene Lozano, will offer some words of welcome.
The impact of the war in Ukraine on both the Middle East and North Africa is analysed by Youssef Cherif in the latest issue of the magazine afkar/ideas. The Tunisian analyst notes that the West’s double standards towards Ukraine, the perennial anti-imperialist sentiment, Russian and pro-Russian propaganda, and Ukraine’s own position, which has close ties with Israel, are some of the reasons why countries in the region support Russia.
The implications of the war in Ukraine for Turkey are also discussed in afkar/ideas. Jana Jabbour argues that pragmatism in Turkish foreign policy is not only motivated by a desire to restore its image on the international stage, but above all by economic considerations. In the same vein, Can Selçuki and Mustafa Kutlay stress that the economic consequences of the war put additional pressure on the Turkish economy, which has close ties with Russia in the energy, tourism and construction sectors.
