The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, chaired yesterday the meeting of the National Commission for the candidacy of Malaga to host the Expo 2027, composed of the Government of Spain, the City Council of Malaga, the Andalusian Government and the Provincial Council of Malaga.
During the meeting, held at the headquarters of the Government Subdelegation in Malaga and also attended by the mayor of Malaga, Francisco de la Torre, among other authorities, the next presentation of the candidacy of the Andalusian city during the 170th General Assembly of the Bureau of International Exhibitions (Bureau International des Expositions, BIE), to be held on June 20 was discussed. Also discussed was the survey mission that will travel to Spain (Malaga and Madrid) in September to see the city and the project first hand.
On June 7 in Paris, Spain presented Malaga’s candidacy for the 2027 International Exposition, which is dedicated to The urban era: towards the sustainable city. The candidature dossier was presented at the BIE headquarters by the ambassador on Special Mission for the Expo Malaga 2027 Candidature, Juan José Escobar; the Spanish representative at the BIE and economic and commercial counselor of the Spanish Embassy in Paris, Javier Burgos; and the general director for Expo 2027 in Malaga of the Malaga City Council, Jerónimo Blasco. Malaga will compete with the candidatures of Minnesota (USA), Phuket (Thailand), Belgrade (Serbia) and Bariloche (Argentina), which were also presented on the same day.
During his speech before the Commission, Albares stressed that the candidacy of Malaga is “a solid country project of a city with great international projection” and said that “Expo 2027 Malaga will be a unique opportunity to strengthen the model of sustainable city” and that “the experience of Malaga and Spain has much to offer in this global urban era.”
After this meeting, Albares, the Mayor of Malaga and the Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism, Reyes Maroto, attended the luncheon Expo 2027 Malaga: An opportunity for Spain, organized by the Club Diálogos para la Democracia at the Automobile and Fashion Museum of Malaga, during which the Foreign Minister said that “choosing Malaga will be a success for Expo 2027”. “Malaga, the birthplace of Picasso and capital of the Costa del Sol for its culture and art, deserves to be chosen,” he added.
